EVDO-Based IPhone: Can It Really Be?
EVDO or CDMA 1x users can now have a bigger hope of using iPhone on EVDO network after recent claim from Northeast Securities analyst Ashok Kumar stated that Qualcomm has struck a deal with Apple to provide a 3G EV-DO chip for a CDMA-based iPhone. The EVDO-based iPhone is scheduled for launch later this year. Having iPhone running on EVDO can be quite spectacular, since the report also stated that the CDMA-based iPhone is created for Verizon users.
Apple had been in suspense to land a GSM-CDMA chip that is now being developed by Qualcomm — the chip was supposedly used to enable Apple to continue offering a single type of iPhone for all users. However, the recent claim stated that Apple’s timeline to use the GSM-CDMA chip was not met, and that they have decided to use traditional CDMA chip instead.
If this claim is true, than we may be looking at a whole new era of iPhone development. With thousands, if not millions, of EVDO network users currently exist, it is just a matter of time before iPhone claim the market share for this particular market segment and be (possibly) the best mobile phone and multimedia device ever created so far.
Maybe the need to penetrate the CDMA market is what’s causing Apple to use Qualcomm traditional CDMA chip in the first place. With Windows Mobile CDMA devices currently dominating the CDMA smartphone market, iPhone must move quickly to secure a place in the already competitive market. Make sure you stay tuned for more updates.
